Distinguished and Famous people from Sydney and Surrounds

⚓ Thomas Sutcliffe Mort

Thomas Sutcliffe Mort built a wide-ranging business career in Sydney after arriving from England in 1837. Wool marketing, shipping facilities and experiments in refrigeration placed him within the city's expanding connections with rural Australia and overseas trade. He also supported churches and education, including giving land for St Mark's at Darling Point and contributing to St Andrew's Cathedral and St Paul's College. After his death in 1878, working men met to propose a memorial. The resulting statue in Macquarie Place recalls a businessman whose influence reached across the harbour, the commercial city and the pastoral economy.

📜 Mary Reibey

Mary Reibey arrived in New South Wales as a fifteen-year-old convict in 1792 and became a successful Sydney businesswoman. After her husband Thomas died in 1811, she took control of their shipping and mercantile interests while raising seven children. She expanded the business and acquired city property before retiring to Newtown. Her charitable and educational interests helped establish her public standing in colonial society. The life behind the face on the twenty-dollar note crossed several parts of greater Sydney, from the commercial waterfront to a quieter suburban retirement.

🎬 Paul Hogan

Paul Hogan was working as a rigger on Sydney Harbour Bridge when he devised the act that introduced him to television audiences through New Faces in 1971. Presenting himself as a tap-dancing knife-thrower, he instead made jokes at the judges' expense. Television comedy and, later, Crocodile Dundee followed. His bridge job gives Sydney a particularly concrete connection with a performer whose screen character became internationally familiar. The early act also suggests that the confidence to turn a situation into comedy arrived before the film career and the famous outback hat.
